There was a review in Nuclear Power back in late January which I didn’t see. There will be more reviews when the printed book hits the shelves. The reviewer loved Legends of the Wulin so much…I had to put a link to it here.

Also, there is a cool wuxia webcomic there called “How I killed your master.” It reads like a LOTW Story. There’s also an article on best provider of safe youtube views up there.

Speaking of when the printed book will be sent… our printer had delays related to Chinese New Years; we got the proof today. If everything is looking as we designed, we should be able to start production run next week. I will update everyone on the status next week.

Its been a while coming. There have been some setbacks. Thank you fans, for waiting patiently.

The final proof of Legends of the Wulin has been accepted. We are telling the printer to start the press. If there is no other problems, we will be mailing the book in 20 days to the pre-sales edition customers.

The cults of the Old Ones have endured for thousands of years. They have hidden in the shadows of civilization. They have polluted themselves with vile practices: insane and ancient arts of magic; profane revels; and the worship of malignant gods that slumber beyond the world of man. Their obscene and degenerate rituals have not stopped, not even to this day.

It is the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and twenty two. For thousands of years providence has blessed humanity. Now and then the planets have aligned for some short period, or a gate opened for a brief interval between the Earth and some dismal world. Now and then, in short, the cults have had their day, have brought forth the vindictive glory of their ancient gods and rung down unholy ruin on the world. But between such inauspicious moments the monstrous deities of the cults have slept.

For thousands of years providence has blessed humanity.

No longer

It is the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and twenty two and the signs are right for the Old Ones to return. This time they will not engage in a few restless hours or days of horror before returning to their troubled sleep. This time they will linger on the Earth forever, rewarding their devout and discarding otherwise all the lives of the human race.

In this fatal hour a great sorcerer has emerged from the shadows. Centuries ago he exiled himself from the world of man, hid himself away from humanity’s prying eyes. Now he returns, a master of the mystic arts, the only man with the vision necessary to awaken and return the Old Ones to the world. To this end he wanders the Earth, seeking out the independent cults and covens of the Old Ones and coercing them into his service, banding them together into a single entity known as the Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood turns its rituals and its strength to a single purpose. They intend to collectively breach the veil that separates the human world from their slumbering and malevolent gods.

They are strong and they are cruel and the stars are right for their objective but the world is not yet lost.

For every power in this world there is a balancing power. The insane actions of the sorcerer and the rise of the Brotherhood have caught the attention of a small band of well-funded scholars and adventurers. They stumbled onto the trail of the Brotherhood—more by foolish luck than anything else—and in a short time have uncovered evidence of a conspiracy so mad, so perverse, and so unacceptable that no official power would believe them that it exists. They can hope for no aid or solace but there is a chance that they can stop the Brotherhood themselves.

It isn’t much of a chance, not really, but it’s all that humanity has.

They travel the world, these valiant men and women, in pursuit of the master sorcerer. They struggle to survive, facing danger at every turn, and to undermine the sorcerer’s actions when they can. They disrupt the collective work of the Brotherhood. They seek the keystone item whose destruction could put an end to the Brotherhood’s plans.

Time is running out.

They are learning the sorcerer’s secrets. They are beginning to understand what it is they will need to do. But time is running out.

If they cannot stop the Brotherhood soon the world will end.

Sorcerer Player: In Trail of the Brotherhood one devious player takes on the role of the ancient sorcerer. This character travels the globe unifying independent cults into the Brotherhood. The player must acquire enough Power through these cults to activate a magical item and summon forth a specific Old One (a malignant god chosen by the player before the game begins.) To succeed the Sorcerer Player must prevent the investigators that pursue the sorcerer from learning which Great Old One the sorcerer seeks to awaken. The sorcerer may achieve this end in a number of different ways, including misdirection, sending agents of the cults to attack the investigators directly, and summoning lesser creatures.

When the sorcerer earns sufficient power through binding cults to the Brotherhood, and acquires the magical item necessary to the ceremony, the sorcerer may summon the selected Old One. The world ends horrifically in the early twentieth century and the players’ existence becomes contingent on a transient bubble of malformed causality but, on the bright side, the Sorcerer Player wins the game.

Investigative Players: The other 1-3 players take the role of Investigative Teams. They must keep the Brotherhood from gathering enough power to summon an Old One into the world. Ultimately they must use Clues left in the wake of the Brotherhood’s activities to identify the magical item required for the summoning ceremony. They must then take that item from a cult or the Sorcerer and destroy it, thus condemning the Old Ones to continued slumber…at least, for now.

When the investigative teams have destroyed the item, the Investigative Players win the game. As an added bonus, the world does not end.

Trail of the Brotherhood is part adventure and part deductive strategy as the players enter the desperate world of H.P. Lovecraft.

It’s a wonderful time to be a hero!

The rain falls over the city of Sweet Melancholy, rhythmically pitter-pattering on the tile roofs and stone pavements. The melody of the rain mixes with the music coming out of the willow houses and wine shops of the pleasure district. Courtesans and patrons walk out into the street, laughing and splashing with their every step. The light of red lanterns reflects in the canal waters alongside the face of the full moon, like a host of fairy maidens tending to the moon goddess Chang’e.

The rain grows heavier and heavier, the sound of falling drops drowning the music. The clients and their companions search out refuge anywhere they can. The street clears except for one man sitting by a street stall.

He has a rugged appearance and wears tattered hemp clothes. An old straw hat full of holes falls over his shabby face, shadowing his features. He lifts his head as he downs a cup of wine in a single gulp. His eyes are full of drunkenness and melancholy. His mouth sports a half grin full of self-pity and nostalgia.

A sheathed sword rests on the counter of the stall. It is his only companion across the World of Martial Arts, the Jiang Hu . The shopkeeper serves him a steaming bowl of hundun; the dumpling soup will warm his belly on this rainy night and the wine will warm his heart.

The name of the man is Wang Xiao Lan. He is known across the Wulin, the fraternity of Martial Artists, as the Wolf Swordsman. He is a Wandering Blade, a hero set to forge his own destiny by the fire of his passion and the strength of his kung fu.

A gust of strong wind breaks through the wall of rain. Wang Xiao Lan leaps to the side with amazing speed as the street stall is blown to splinters and its shopkeeper is thrown aside by the impact. A long chain retracts back to its owner, a hunchbacked man with a large nose in a black cloak.

The shadows around the hunchback seem to come to life and four cloaked figures suddenly stand besides him. “The Five Vultures of Sand River!” the swordsman exclaims as he recognizes their attire. He knew they would be chasing him, but he didn’t expect them to find him so soon.

“I spent all my remaining money on that wine, and I was quite enjoying it! Can’t you fellows give a man a minute of respite?”. Without answering one of the Five Vultures dashes towards Xiao Lan. A fierce spear bathed in gold Chi lunges forth from his sleeve. It furiously cuts through the drops of rain as it lunges towards its target like a hawk hunting a sparrow.

Heavenly General Style !

The spear seems to multiply as it slices the air around it. In a flash hundreds of golden spear afterimages break through the darkness of the night. The assassin yells the name of his technique, his voice louder than the thunder in the sky, furious enough to all but silence the rain; ”

No Mercy for Hares !”

Like a pack of hunting dogs after a hare, the spear chases the swordsman. It does not reach him. He staggers and slides out of the way with a drunken sway, sliding and splashing across the wet street. At every moment he seems about to fall, but he never does.

The Drunken God effortlessly evades all the dangers of the world!

Using his mastery of the Plum Wine Swagger Style he effortlessly avoids the lunging assassin’s spear. Slivers of gold Chi cut the rain drops. The tip of the spear crashes on the street, cracking the stones. As the swordsman continues his drunken dance, he gets closer and closer to the assassin.

The spearman attacks high, aiming at his head. Xiao Lan crouches low and spins around with a kick, knocking the spearman off his feet and making him fall with a splash onto the increasingly flooded street.

“Hmm Golden Heavenly Vulture seems to have gotten dizzy, and I was the one who was drinking. What a disappointment!”

A shadow leaps towards the swordsman. The second assassin’s mastery of Lightfoot allows him to cross the distance in a single leap. In midair he unsheathes two short sabers. The blades move at an astonishing speed, trailing sparkles of Crimson Chi like twin falling stars against the night sky.

This attack is not as easy to evade. The swordsman is forced to leap aside to avoid being decapitated. Just as he seems to be running out of street, he back flips into the nearby canal. His feet gently tap the water’s surface without sinking, demonstrating that he, as well, is a master of Lightfoot.

As the assassin gives chase he spins around in midair, becoming like a whirlwind of crimson blades. The water of the canal is drawn into this attack, the splashed water becoming as blades itself, as Xiao Lan lands on the other side of the canal His opponent’s attack emerges from the water like a dragon made of sabers.

Heartless Blade!

This is a merciless style, famous for only leaving orphans and widows in its path. Yet despite his apparent power, Xiao Lan’s opponent’s style marks him not as a dragon of the Jiang Hu but merely as a raging beast.

The true dragon is patient and calm and his majesty cannot be denied. It is just so with Xiao Lan, who soars across the street, skating on the wet stones, his feet barely touching them, soaring as the name of his stance suggests, like a Dragon in the Ocean!

Suddenly he stops retreating and dashes ahead, his sword lounging forward, yet remains sheathed dancing with a blinding rhythm, shielding at once the seven most vital points in his body. This is the masterful defense of the dragon style: Seven Star Rotation! The false dragon falls from heaven as his twin sabers scatter across the street..

As the second assassin falls, the three remaining assailants leap across the night sky; suddenly Xiao Lan is besieged by a rain of daggers, a swirling chain lashing at him, and claw-like fingers.

His Chi Aura expands around him, splashing the water in all directions and shielding him from harm. His internal strength is truly something to behold: his eyes are no longer sleepy, and they shine with murderous intent. The thinnest string of blood runs across his lower lip.

“This has gone on long enough. Now you will see why they call me The Wolf Swordsman. The wine cannot warm my heart tonight, but maybe your blood will warm my blade.”

As he unsheathes his blade the moon reflects across its length, making it shine brighter, and in one swift motion the air is cut, with a howling sound…

Maybe you’ve heard of them. Maybe you haven’t. It doesn’t matter, because either way this book will give you everything you need to know.

If you’ve found this site then you’ve probably heard the stories of the Nobilis. You probably know that they’re supposed to be living among us, or, at least, beside us, in the corners of your vision or down some short cut’s twisty path — a little bit real and a little bit legend, anyhow, walking the secret ways between the mundane and mythic worlds. They’re a god-haunted folk, supposedly, heroes and villains unto us, creatures standing between us and the great forces of being and unbeing, humans raised up and given power beyond the dreams of vanity and forbidden only love.

“When I feel myself tempted to love,” Idri-mi said, “I scrape a tiny piece off of
my heart—the part that loves—and leave it here.”

There was a pile of red scraps at the end of the catwalk. I eyed it with new respect.

“No,” she said, and gestured with her head. I looked over the catwalk’s edge.

The pit was as deep as the world, and it was full of wind; and the wind was full of red.

—from the Thought-Record of Ellen McIntosh

Nobilis: the Essentials (Volume 1: Field Guide to the Powers) will serve as your guide to the Nobilis and other magical creatures that live among and beside us, as well as including a complete and full-featured role-playing game” that allows you and your friends to take on the role of Nobilis. Each of your characters — a “Noble” or “Power,” one of the Nobilis — will command and embody a sacred Estate, a fundamental principle of the world such as Fire, Storms, Hope, Dreams, Cars, Cities, Pain, or Love.

HIDDEN TRUTHS

Dharma Worms

These transparent green inchworm-spirits assign people their dharma — the way they should be in life, the path that is harmonious with them, the “destiny” that is given them.

They crawl over you sometime in your youth to provide the initial dharmic determination and return occasionally throughout your childhood to touch the matter up.

Inchworms don’t really care whether they’re assigning people power, potentialities, attractions, or inevitable outcomes, so it’s not always clear what exactly a person’s dharma is; what is clear is that it somehow defines what works for a person and works a kind of goingness of direction into the fabric of their self. When an Imperator makes you a Power, your old dharma becomes obsolete. You can attract dharma-worms with a mixture of honey and crushed flowers left out on a porcelain plate, but unless you’ve lost your dharma and failed to replace it with anything else all they can really do is crawl on you, polish any bits of your dharma that may have faded, and measure roughly how many dharma-inches you have remaining.

MYTHIC REALITY

This is the reality behind the dream that is our world. In an endless emptiness there is a single cup of fire. The flames of it are blue.

There is no scale to it.

There can be no scale to it. There are no referents. The texture of the void is impermeable to the idea of measurement. The stars are unreachable and incomparable above.

It is larger than the universe and it is smaller than a pebble in your shoe.

And in that cup, a tree. And from its branches — dangling like fruit — are worlds.

A GAME OF POWERS

The Nobilis RPG uses a diceless system built around resource allocation and semantics.

You’ll have access to a collection of loosely-specified abilities that range in power from the mundane to the world-shattering. Most of these abilities are defined in reference to your Estate — e.g., Fire, Storms, Transformation, Consensus, Cats, Fleece, or whatever else it is of which you are a god; the better you are at forming and expressing ideas about that Estate, the more potent your abilities become.

You’ll also use a limited supply of “Miracle Points” to push past your ordinary limits and perform atypically incredible feats.

The new Nobilis includes a lifepath rules for developing new concepts and characters, as well as a brand-new Destiny system for advancing your character, changing the world, and winning even an Excrucian or Imperator’s heart.

The Diceless systems of Nobilis handles:

  • lifepath rules for developing new concepts and characters;
  • Diceless systems for —
    • mastering the power of body and mind;
    • wielding and controlling the substance of your Estate;
    • becoming one with that principle; and
    • seizing the treasures, principalities, and armies that the Nobilis have at their command;
  • an updated version of the Nobilis “Gifts” system for creating customized and unique abilities;
  • a new system for defining the rules and laws governing your nature and your Estate; and
  • a brand-new Destiny system for advancing your character, changing the world, and winning even an Excrucian or Imperator’s heart.
